Finding fullfillment through Concordia Continuing Education's mentorship program

Since joining our UX program as a mentor in 2022, senior user researcher Marianne Carpentier has helped enrich the field’s ecosystem by providing industry-specific guidance to our students

Mentorship Carpentier: “The structure of the program really lends itself to building a deeper connection that can uplift your mentee.”

Our programs not only empower students but also make an impact on industry leaders.

Since joining our UX program as a mentor in 2022, senior user researcher Marianne Carpentier has helped enrich the field’s ecosystem by providing industry-specific guidance to our students.

“It has been really empowering for me to help the students discover new things about the field, answer their questions, and guide them forward in their careers,” said Carpentier. “The structure of the program [an eight-hour commitment] really lends itself to building a deeper connection that can uplift your mentee.”

In June 2023, Carpentier committed to guiding and uplifting new mentee Maeve Doyle, a CCE UX student who was pursuing a new professional path following a career in fine arts.

“I came into a meeting with Marianne and expressed that I wanted to be more sure of my abilities in UX design,” said Doyle, who had elected to work with Carpentier at the end of the program to focus on workplace integration. “I just wanted to feel confident that my learning in the classroom would translate into the workplace.”

Carpentier’s mentorship proved pivotal in instilling Doyle with the confidence she sought. Carpentier shared valuable insights into industry-specific interview questions and technical test preparations and regularly offered feedback aimed at polishing Doyle’s portfolio.

“One thing that juniors often do in their portfolios is put a bunch of interfaces, images, and examples but fail to contextualize their work,” explained Carpentier. “So being able to provide insight into portfolio development and workplace integration have helped my mentees make an impact in the work market.”

Equipped with Carpentier’s valuable insights, Doyle was poised to capitalize on a job opportunity. Within a month of completing the program, Doyle received word of a job opening for a junior UX/UI designer through Carpentier, who had leveraged her network to find the position. This tip, coupled with Doyle’s refined portfolio and newfound confidence, enabled her to excel in the interview and land her first job in the industry.

“It was thanks to my mentor for putting us in contact,” Doyle said. “I’m super thankful to Marianne.”
