Florida is a hotspot for snowbirds — and Concordians, says Walter Tomenson, BA 68.

“Florida has lots of Canadians,” the Department of Economics graduate says. “It also has lots of Concordia grads.” Home to half a million Canadian homeowners, the Sunshine State is the latest hub in Concordia’s 28-chapter network.

To celebrate, the chapter will host an evening with Concordia President Alan Shepard at the Florida Country Club south of Boynton Beach on Tuesday, February 18.

“More than 30 people have already signed up,” says Tomenson, who was named 2013 Alumnus of the Year at Concordia’s Alumni Recognition Awards.

Some 50 Concordia alumni and devotees are expected to attend the gathering. Ken Taylor, Canada’s former ambassador to Iran, will be among them.

Tomenson played a key role in Concordia’s Loyola Refectory Restoration Campaign, which raised $4 million towards the Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre. He says the birth of the Florida chapter reflects Concordia’s vigorous growth. “This really speaks to Concordia’s global reach.”

Close to 500 Concordia graduates live in Florida.
