The award was presented by Governor General David Johnston at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, on April 7.
“You share a desire to help others and to make your communities kinder, healthier places in which to live,” said Johnston at the ceremony.
Sam, who emigrated from Guyana in 1975, helps new immigrants navigate the local educational system. Through the Guyana Cultural Centre of Montreal, she mentors families and tutors students.
“We are what we are because of those around us,” says Sam. “For me, just seeing the smiles of those I’ve helped is reward enough.”
Sam has worked as both a teacher with the English Montreal School Board and as a clinical nurse. She is a member of the Quebec Board of Black Educators.
