Seven distinguished with Alumni Recognition Awards

Dedicated volunteer, pioneering philanthropist among honorees of Concordia University Alumni Association

From cherished faculty members to dedicated volunteers and a graduate who proudly represents her Mohawk community, this year’s eight Alumni Recognition Awards recipients embody the strength and diversity of the Concordia community.

The annual Alumni Recognition Awards will recognize significant contributions to the university by alumni, faculty, staff, students and volunteers at a banquet at the Sofitel Hotel Montreal on May 20. The signature event is sponsored by the Concordia University Alumni Association (CUAA) and organized by Advancement and Alumni Relations. These are the 2014 honourees:

ALUMNA OF THE YEAR

Kahente Horn-Miller, BA 99, MA 03, PhD 09, is coordinator for the Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission, which oversees the legislative development process based in ancient Haudenosaunee principles of consensus. She is also a lecturer at Concordia and McGill universities. 

HONORARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP

David J. Azrieli, LLD 75, C.M., C.Q., is a world-renowned as an innovative builder, designer and philanthropist. In 2011, the Azrieli Foundation donated $5 million for Concordia to establish the Azrieli Institute of Israel Studies. He also endowed fellowships for Concordia graduate students in the 1970s and the Azrieli Holocaust Collection at Concordia in 1984.

HUMBERTOS SANTOS AWARD OF MERIT

J. Pierre Brunet, BComm 70, joined Concordia’s Faculty of Commerce and Administration (now the John Molson School of Business, or JMSB) in 1972. He remained a faculty member there for 25 years. He was a founding member of the board of directors of the John Molson International MBA Case Competition and of the Faculty of Commerce and Administration Advisory Board.

BENOIT PELLAND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

John Aylen, MA 76, is a lecturer in the JMSB’s Department of Marketing and a marketing communications professional. He was president of the CUAA from 2002 to 2005 and is a former member of the university’s Board of Governors. He is president of the board of Youth Employment Services.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY/STAFF AWARD

Marguerite Mendell, BA 72, is a long-time professor at Concordia’s School of Community and Public Affairs. She won the 2013 Prix du Québec, the highest distinction awarded by the Government of Quebec. She joined Concordia 30 years ago and has made significant contributions to the School of Community and Public Affairs and the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy.

ALUMNI AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Saul Carliner, is an associate professor and Provost Fellow for eLearning, and program director of the PhD in Concordia’s Department of Education. His research and teaching focus is on the design of materials for learning and communication in the workplace, especially online materials, the management of groups that produce these materials and the transfer of research to practice.

MBA ALUMNA OF THE YEAR

Nancy Hammond, BComm 89 and MBA 93, joined TD Bank Group in 1989. She is now vice president of the Affinity Market Group at TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, where she oversees management of strategic partnerships for home and auto insurance. She has been involved with Concordia as a scholarship donor and served on the boards of the JMSB Alumni Association and the CUAA.

  • Join us as the Concordia University Alumni Association presents its highest honour to seven exceptional Concordia community members. The 23rd Annual Alumni Recognition Awards Banquet will be held at the Sofitel Hotel Montreal, Picasso Ballroom, 2nd Floor, 1155 Sherbrooke St. W., on May 20, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is $75 per person, which includes cocktail and dinner.
