Concordia President Alan Shepard shared with international students — at a welcome reception in their honour — how traveling to Europe for a study-abroad program changed his life when he was an undergraduate. He encouraged students to explore their new city.

“Most of the experience happens outside the classroom,” Shepard recalled, “and there are 250,000 students in Montreal. That’s a lot of people to meet, so get busy!”

Around 275 guests — international students, members of the diplomatic corps and university faculty and staff — attended the reception at the Grey Nuns Building on September 9.

Graduate student Adyemi Adesina arrived in Montreal from Lagos, Nigeria, in August to study civil engineering. He appreciated meeting people of diverse backgrounds he had never encountered before: “I spoke to people from Korea for instance.”

“I came to Concordia because it has one of the best research facilities in the world. It’s really a privilege,” explained Adesina, who also plans to learn French.

New Concordians raise a glass to the university's 6,000 international students, hailing from over 150 countries.

There are more than 6,000 international students at Concordia. Hailing from over 150 different countries, they make up almost 12 per cent of the for-credit student body.

With all the programs and services available, Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs Benoit-Antoine Bacon, BA 95, encouraged new students to get involved both on and off campus.

“Concordia is like a microcosm of Montreal,” Bacon pointed out. He said the school and the city demonstrate cultural diversity, where languages, traditions and points of view intersect to make a highly creative environment.

The event was organized by the International Students Office and Advancement and Alumni Relations.
