“The show taps into that desire to build something,” says Armitage on the program’s enduring success. “The appeal is so broad that grandparents and teenagers can watch together.”
Armitage joined CBC in Toronto to work on local news in 2006. As he explains, a certain amount of luck was involved in landing work with Dragon’s Den.
“My colleague mentioned there was this new project, and that CBC was looking for people,” says Armitage, who was the second person hired to the show. Armitage has since won two Gemini and Canadian Screen Awards for his work.
The Toronto resident explains that chance encounters also drew him to this alumni chapter event.
“You meet people you don’t run into everyday. You can strike up professional conversations — good things can happen,” he says.
Armitage is a second-generation Concordian. His father, John Armitage, graduated with a bachelor of commerce in 1965.
The younger Armitage, who studied creative writing, says his favorite thing about Concordia is the variety.
“There is such a broad spectrum of ideas at Concordia. You meet so many different kinds of people.”
