At least 1,000 of Concordia’s 200,000 graduates call the red dragon of Asia their home.

A Concordia delegation attended alumni chapter events in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing on June 11, 14 and 17, respectively. At the Hong Kong gathering alone, there were 140 attendees.

“There’s a real sense of pride and unity among our Chinese graduates,” says Bram Freedman, vice-president of Advancement and External Relations, who attended the three Asian chapter celebrations.

Joining Freedman on the journey was Graham Carr, interim provost and vice-president of Research and Graduate Studies and Leisha LeCouvie, senior direction of Alumni Relations.

“Our visit was an opportunity to talk about the successes we share as members of the Concordia community,” says Carr. “As a group, our momentum is growing.”

Concordia has an increasing number of international students — more than 6,000 of the 46,000 — of whom 2,000 are from China.

Recognizing a community leader

Bran Freedman and Ronald Lo Bram Freedman awards Ronald Lo the International Alumni Ambassador Award in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, Ronald Lo, BComm 93, was celebrated for his enduring commitment to his alma mater with the university’s International Alumni Ambassador Award.

The accolade is among nine Alumni Recognition Awards given this year by the Concordia University Alumni Association (CUAA). It recognizes long-term commitment to the institution beyond Canadian borders.

Lo became involved with the CUAA Hong Kong chapter in 1994 and served as president from 2004 to 2016.

“I’m deeply honoured,” says Lo. “Being a graduate of Concordia is unique in China. I’m proud of my international education.”

Lo is, as well, a director of the Concordia University Hong Kong Foundation, which funds up to 10 academic journeys each year. Under the steadfast leadership of William Yip, BA 67, LLD 98, the foundation has supported 65 undergraduate students with scholarships since being established in 1998.

“It’s gratifying to help give others the same opportunity I enjoyed,” says Lo.
