Grants up to $12K for social sciences and humanities research on Japan

Are you a master’s or PhD student in the social sciences or humanities seeking to conduct research in Japan? Apply for the Tanaka Fund Grant to Support Promising Junior Japanese Studies Scholars by January 31, 2025, for a chance to receive up to $12,000 to cover travel and research-related expenses.

Japanese Studies is a branch of area studies focusing on social sciences and humanities research related to Japan, including language, culture, literature, politics, history, religion, economics, philosophy, film, arts and science.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. 
  • Open to master’s or PhD students, but PhD candidates are not eligible. 
  • The research in Japan must directly contribute to a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation. 
  • Funding supports a maximum of 3 months of research in Japan.
