Sept. 6: Opening event for siren eun young jung's first solo exhibition in North America

For siren eun young jung's first solo exhibition in North America, the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery presents her 15 years of research, dedicated to the Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project (2008-).
To mark the opening of the exhibition, artist siren eun young jung and the curator Ji-Yoon Han invite the public to MOMENTA’s first public event taking place within the exhibition The Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project. Hijack the Gender!, a North American premiere.
Attend the opening event at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (1400 Maisonneuve Blvd. W., ground floor) on September 6 at 4 p.m. or visit the exhibit from September 5 to October 28.
The discussion will highlight a practice that uses archives, performance, and the documentary to explore nonconformity in relation to social and esthetic norms. It will also be the opportunity to situate this exhibition in relation to the curatorial vision of Masquerades: Drawn to Metamorphosis.
siren eun young jung makes work that explores the subversive potential of popular cultural practices and highlights the existence of communities that, to this day, maintain spaces for dissimilarity and non-conformity within a given society. Since 2008, she has been involved in a long-term project on Yeoseong Gukgeuk, a "traditional women’s theatre" formed in Korea following Japanese colonization, which became popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
The exhibition is presented by MOMENTA Biennale de l’image and produced in partnership with the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery.

Pour la première exposition personnelle de siren eun young jung en Amérique du Nord, la Galerie Leonard & Bina Ellen se fait le théâtre de 15 années de recherche consacrées au Yeoseong Gukgeuk Project.
Dans le cadre de ce premier évènement public de MOMENTA 2023 et pour souligner l’ouverture de l’exposition, l’artiste siren eun young jung et la commissaire Ji-Yoon Han invitent les visiteur·se·s à une conversation déambulatoire dans l’exposition Le Projet Yeoseong Gukgeuk. Dévoyer le genre, présentée en avant-première nord-américaine à la Galerie Ellen.
Assistez à l'événement d'ouverture à la Galerie Leonard & Bina Ellen (1400, boul. de Maisonneuve O., rez-de-chaussée) le 6 septembre à 16 h ou visitez l'exposition du 5 septembre au 28 octobre.
La rencontre mettra en lumière une démarche artistique dédiée à l’exploration de la non-conformité vis-à-vis des normes sociales et esthétiques par les moyens de l’archive, du documentaire et de la performance. Ce sera également l’occasion de situer l’exposition par rapport à la vision commissariale de Mascarades. L’attrait de la métamorphose.
L’œuvre de siren eun young jung explore le potentiel subversif des pratiques culturelles populaires et met en lumière l’existence de communautés qui, aujourd’hui comme hier, maintiennent des espaces de dissemblance et de non-conformité au sein d’une société donnée. Depuis 2008, l’artiste coréenne est engagée dans un projet de longue haleine sur le Yeoseong Gukgeuk, « théâtre traditionnel des femmes » constitué en Corée au lendemain de la colonisation japonaise et ayant connu un grand succès dans les années 1950 et 1960.
