Term: This is a two-year position that runs from approximately July 2024 to June 2026 (start date negotiable). The job will mainly take place in the gallery, on Concordia’s SGW campus in Montréal, and some remote work is also possible. Support for travel and professional development is also available.

Hours: 21 hours a week

Salary: $33 / hour

 

Job description

The FOFA Gallery invites applications for a Curator of Sustainability. The selected candidate will lead the Gallery’s sustainability initiatives over a two-year period, and will manage activities related to sustainable signage, sustainable exhibition design, experimental labs, training sessions, material repurposing, and communication with partners and funders. They will have the opportunity to propose new initiatives and related programming. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with the FOFA Gallery’s existing team to experiment and share information throughout our networks.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in contemporary arts and culture as well as a keen interest in/knowledge of sustainability practices. Candidates who have completed an MA or MFA in Art History, Curatorial Studies or Studio Arts are encouraged to apply; those from related fields or with equivalent work or life experience will also be considered.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest and/or accomplishments in the field of curating, project management, research, education and/or exhibition practice;
  • Bilingualism: good spoken English and French, excellent writing skills in either English or French (language skills will be evaluated during the interview process);
  • Superior communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
  • Familiarity with current conversations around environmental responsibility, as well as how these relate to galleries, museums, and contemporary artistic practice;
  • Experience coordinating projects and leading teams, some knowledge/experience with tracking and managing project budgets;
  • Creative, open and experimental attitude, willing to try new things, take initiative, and think outside the box.

Description of Tasks

  • Oversee the Gallery’s sustainability initiatives, including: coordinate sustainable signage installation and exhibition design projects, research and plan waste auditing, design and run experimental material labs;
  • Coordinate with other galleries/art spaces locally, regionally and nationally to offer offsite training/consultation with FOFA gallery technicians;
  • Oversee communications and outreach related to the project;
  • Compile information about project findings, share information about the Gallery and our initiatives with the public;
  • Track evolving sectoral changes/challenges locally and abroad, propose improvements to existing practices at FOFA and in the sector;
  • Liaise with artists, curators, technicians, students, faculty, collaborators, community members to assess needs, track project development, and propose innovative solutions;
  • Seek out new project partners and explore avenues for sharing information and resources;
  • Research and apply for additional funding opportunities;
  • Updating and keeping accurate records and files
