VAV Gallery Directors (2011-2012)
Emma Siemens-Adolphe & Courtenay Mayes
About the directors
Originally from Italy, Emma Siemens-Adolphe is presently completing her final year of a BFA in Art History at Concordia University. Throughout her undergraduate degree she familiarized herself with exhibition practices by co-directing the student run VAV Gallery. As an executive of the Student Art Studies Association, she continues to be involved in the university’s art milieu by promoting and facilitating conversation about current artisitc practices. Mostly, she is interested in how global, contemporary art practices inform their audience on alternative ways of perceiving their circumstances and surroundings. She views contemporary art as being a discourse in which preconceived notions of societal constraints, economical modules and political analysis are challenged. In this way, she is interested in re-considering the defining labels that have previously been placed onto contemporary art practices.
Courtenay Mayes is an artist living and working in Montréal. She is the founder and director of the paper apartment gallery in Montréal, and former co - director of Concordia's VAV Gallery. Courtenay is currently completing her fine arts degree in Fibres at Concordia University in Montréal, QC
