Mario Sierra Fajardo

Word to Intellectuals and Est Originale Peccatum

2024

Artist statement

This project seeks to reflect on the dynamics of power exerted by the Cuban government on culture, economics, and education through a series of pieces related to historical moments in the Cuban Revolution. By intertwining personal narratives with broader socio-political commentary, the project highlights the subjective reality of individuals within oppressive totalitarian systems while inviting viewers to reflect on collective experiences of ideological conditioning. The pieces presented try to disrupt their original context by reinterpreting governmental archives and imagery, challenging viewers to question the intended narratives and confront the underlying power dynamics inherent in language and representation. The project interrogates the hierarchical structures perpetuated by the Cuban social system, emphasizing the role of language as a tool for reinforcing state ideologies and stifling dissent. Through visual elements and personal narrative, it invites reflection on the pervasive influence of state propaganda on individual consciousness while advocating for a reimagining of education as a liberating force rather than a tool of oppression.
