Écosystème de l'intime
2023
Artist statement
What attention do we pay to the underground, to the roots of things? Guided by the creative process and the intimacy of touch, this sculpture exists somewhere between the epidermis and the cave. Écosystème de l'intime is a creature-cavity inspired by the ambiguity and interconnectedness of different living organisms. In ecosystems, organisms depend on their environment for healthy existence. This ceramic sculpture refers to an inner world. It has the appearance of a cave, yet exists in tension between a state of formation and decay. From the outside, we have access to its interiority. By hybridizing forms reminiscent of the corporeal with forms reminiscent of the sedimentary, I attempt to explore a monstrosity felt in reaction and opposition to the ableist systems perpetuated in the workings of capitalism. A healthy ecosystem is in balance, but this one seems disturbed by a strange juxtapositions. Perceiving creation as a healing tool, this sculpture is part of an intimate journey for the artist and a desire to honour possibilities.
