CELLS: a community conversation on uplifting the creative process

February 12th - 28th, 2018

On February 8th, CC:MTL + Art Matters collaborated to host C E L L S: a community conversation on uplifting the creative process at Temps Libre Mile End. The workshop was inspired by the work of Alisha Mascarenhas + Jordan Brown. From July to August 2017 Alisha + Jordan inhabited Centre Never Apart's Galleries B + C on a weekly basis for  C E L L S : a poetry installation + durational performance of live writing addressing the inextricability of the poem + the socio-political systems in which it is encountered.

During this workshop by/for BIPOC (Black and/or Indigenous and/or People of Colour), participants were encouraged to bring an object/idea that is important to their creative process. We shared material + intangible elements of each individual’s creative process while coming together for an act of collective creation.

This installation documents a new iteration of C E L L S by capturing a moment in collaborative art practice.

CC:MTL:

Founded by Keesha Chung and Nènè Myriam Konaté, CC:MTL (Collective Culture Montreal) is a platform that celebrates the voices of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) as we come together for conversations, performances and parties.

ART MATTERS:

Art Matters is North America’s largest student-run arts festival. We work to celebrate and support the talent within Concordia’s Fine Arts Department as well as to provide emerging artists with the practical skills and tools needed to promote their art. In March, we will be launching the 18th edition of our festival, which is comprised of 10 exhibitions taking place across the city throughout the month of March.

CC:MTL & Art Matters are based in Tio'tia:ke (Montreal), on unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory.
