We are thrilled to announce that Art Volt and Ada X (formely Studio XX) have formed a partnership to propel Fine Arts alumni by providing support in developing an online practice. Selected participants will be commissioned to create a Creative Commons licensed work that is hosted on Wikimedia Commons.
Ada X is a bilingual feminist artist-run centre that supports technological experimentation, creation and critical reflection in media arts. They assist in the independent production and diffusion of art created by artists who identify as women, trans, non-binary and queer in the field of contemporary technological practices.
Applicants are encouraged to illustrate conceptual and technical links to Ada X’s mandate.
Program Overview
Connecting... is an online residency program which aims to help emerging artists develop online practices through alternative and socially engaged platforms, by connecting them to resources and people. How can creative practitioners sustain and give visibility to their practices in our current context? We encourage applicants to consider how open-source platforms, community generated content, and Do-It-Yourself and Do-It-Together ethics can help build online resilience and care for ourselves, and for others.
How does it work?
Through a series of online consultations and conversations with Ada X’s network, selected participants will work towards developing and expanding their online practice and community. Selected participants will also receive a one-year membership to Ada X, and gain access to their production resources and tools.
Selected applicants will receive $1,000 honorarium to develop and produce a Creative Commons licensed work (flat image, giff or short audio file) that will be hosted on Wikimedia Commons. They will also have access to a consultation session with Art+Feminism to better understand the implications and process of producing work for Wikimedia Commons. The works produced through this commission will then be given visibility on Art Volt, Ada X and Art+Feminism’s platforms. Overall, this residency program will be an opportunity to reflect on the production of digital content as well as its distribution and promotion.
Application Criteria
Applicants must be registered for graduation or have graduated from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, within the last three years.
Alumni of the Faculty of Fine Arts can apply individually or as a collective, working either in the context of a particular medium, or using a multi-disciplinary approach. Collaborative applications are encouraged. Please note that in this case, the $1000 honorariums will be divided between applicants.

- URL links to audio and/or video files: up to 5 excerpts of a maximum duration of 3 minutes. Please provide passwords if applicable
- URL links to interactive content: website, webart, apps, etc.
- Descriptive list of visual/audio documentation: name, title, media, context of distribution, year
