English proficiency
English is the main language of instruction at Concordia University. Applicants whose primary language is not English must write a pre-admissions proficiency test if not exempted as indicated below.
These applicants must achieve a satisfactory score on:
- Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Module).
- Although we prefer the TOEFL and IELTS Academic test, since the pandemic we have also accepted the Duolingo English Test (DET)
- Other tests accepted by Concordia University
Requirements
- TOEFL iBT score of 95 with no category below 20.
The ETS TOEFL code for Concordia University is 0956. - Academic IELTS overall band score of 7.0, with no band below 6.5.
- Duolingo English Test, with a minimum score of 120.
- Other test scores are indicated on the Graduate Admissions page.
Please note that all test scores are valid for a period of two years.
Language proficiency exemptions:
Candidates who meet the following criteria may be considered for English proficiency waivers*:
- Quebec applicants who have completed a Diploma of Collegial Students (DEC) AND a university degree in Quebec;
- Applicants who have successfully completed a minimum of three full years of study at the undergraduate or graduate level at an accredited university in one of the following countries.
*Concordia University reserves the right to require an English proficiency test if deemed necessary.
