Black Studies at Concordia

Applications are now open for Concordia’s newly launched Minor in Black and Africa Diaspora Studies in the Canadian Context!

The new program will explore Canadian Black diasporas, histories, and cultures as well as Black academic thought. This 24-credit minor is housed in the Interdisciplinary Studies section of the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) and will welcome its first cohort of students in September 2025. It will offer 200, 300 and 400-level courses spanning different disciplines, including Black-focused topics in literature, history, geography and fine arts.

A recommendation of Concordia’s Task Force on Anti-Black Racism, the minor is a first of its kind in Quebec and underscores Concordia’s commitment as signatory to the Scarborough Charter to combat anti-Black racism and foster Black inclusion in higher education in Canada.

Black histories in Canada have traditionally been underrepresented in school curriculum. As such, the minor aims to diversify and de-colonize the curriculum by introducing students to the historical and contemporary Black presence in Canada, its challenges and lived experience, as well as fostering critical thinking on racialization, racism and anti-Black racism
