Recipes to Activate Knowledge

There are different pathways to activate knowledge. We are always developing and refining the types of events that work best at 4thSpace. We have collected some examples of our favourite formats here to help you imagine could be possible.  These recipes are just the starting point!

Live Podcasts

A podcast is an intimate, one to one conversation here in the space. It is livestreamed and hybrid so listeners can watch and ask questions but it is really about getting into a topic and exploring an idea in-depth.

Workshops

Workshops are hands-on, messy and participatory ways of engaging with knowledge and making connections. 4th Space was built for this. We have the equipment and can re-arange the room as needed for groups to take on big challenges!

Panels, Roundtables, and Fireside Chats

These are the types events we love to host with you. A group of people at our main table uner the lights, and equally important group in the audience eager to ask questions. We manage this all hybrid over zoom and livestream to YouTube with our two-camera setup.

Pop-Up Expos

Can it be an exhibition, but just for one day? The process of building an exhbition is as important as the grand opening. At 4th Space we use our flexible, modular furniture to mock-up exhbition ideas and try out different methods of display. Often part of a residency, these pop-exhibitions are open to the public and can culminate in a livestream walk through.

Poster Sessions

The academic poster is an institution in its own right. Large groups of students, their research projects behind them on printed posters, explaining their work to the crowds. May it live forever.

At 4th Space we do this differently: smaller groups, no printing. We make clever use of our digital screens to show the visuals needed for short mini-presentations - all livestreamed to the audience and families at home.

Lab Walks

4th Space was built on the idea that the university was filled with amazing things going on behind closed doors. Our Lab Walk format was developed as a way to peek inside these research spaces, laboratories, and locations one might never see!

From solar labs to nano-coating spray booths, to event a small hotel room for sleep research, we enjoy bringing our cameras and microphones into these spaces to see what research looks like.

Residencies

Sometimes, things take more time. A residency in 4th Space takes over the entire space and usually lasts a week. Often it culminates in pop-up exhbition or a series of talks and demos of the work proudced here in the space over the week. We like to puncutate the days of making with interviews, social media check-ins and other ways to make the process public.
