Meet Savannah Carvalho

My name's Savannah and I am a third-year political science and co-op student at Concordia. I am passionate about politics, urban planning and public policy. I love to travel to learn about new cultures, ways of life, and city development. Of all the cities I have visited, London is my favourite (only second to Montreal, my hometown). I feel extremely fortunate to have done an exchange in London, and I am eager to help others who wish to do the same.

The scariest part of going on exchange was…

I was nervous about making new friends. Leaving my support system in Montreal was scary, and at times I did feel lonely. But it was easier to make friends than I thought, and I was able to stay in touch with my loved ones back home by creating a travel Instagram account to update them regularly.

Going on exchange challenged me because…

It forced me to grow as a young adult. I had to learn how to find an apartment, sign a lease, open a foreign bank account, budget my money, plan my meals, arrange travel, and adapt to a new environment

The coolest place I visited while on exchange was..

So hard to choose. Maybe the Emirates stadium in London. Or the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Or the underground vaults in Edinburgh.

The one thing I wished I would have known before going on exchange is…

There will be ups and downs. Moving to a new country alone is daunting, and it is normal to feel homesick or overwhelmed at times. In the end, everything worked itself out, and the experience was totally worth it.
