Orientation/advising sessions are organized each year for new students in our programs, and usually take place during the months of May until August. Students are invited to attend these sessions by email.

If you missed the orientation/advising session, you are encouraged to see your program's director/academic advisor prior to registering for any course. You should have your letter of admission for reference.

Returning students in a Mathematics & Statistics program are encouraged to see the academic advisor of their program of study every year prior to registration. Students can also see an academic advisor throughout the year, as needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED ISSUES

Late DNE or DISC requests are done  via the Student Hub (My CU Account, Student Center, Undergraduate Student Request forms) and must include a valid reason, a current copy of your student transcript, and any documentation validating your request.

Submission of these requests is done as follows:

  • Mathematics and Statistics program students must submit the requests via the Student Hub.  The Department will make its recommendation and then forward the request to the Faculty of Arts & Science Student Academic Services.  The Faculty will process the request and the student will be notified of the outcome.
  • Students in other programs must contact their home department to find out the procedures, even if the request is for one of our courses.
  • Independent students must contact Serhiy Homonyuk in the Arts & Science Faculty's Student Academic Services for late DNE, DISC or tuition refunds involving a course in the Mathematics & Statistics Department.  More information here.

Student request forms must be filled properly or it will be returned to the student; missing documentation will cause unecessary delays that may result in the request not being approved.

To learn how to submit an E-form request for these exceptions, please go here

All program students may request a pre-requisite waiver if they already completed an equivalent course in the past. Courses taken more than 10 years ago may not be considered.

Pre-requisite waivers for courses in Mathematics and Statistics are requested by contacting a departmental academic student advisor. You will need to have the official description of the course taken, as well as an official university or college transcript to prove you completed the course.

Independent students must send a Prerequisite Waiver - Independent & Visiting Students to ugrad.mathstat@concordia.ca.  Please make sure all documents are included as required.  Any incomplete requests will not be processed and returned to the student.

Students who are blocked from registering for a Mathematics & Statistics course due to an anti-requisite should contact the Arts & Science Faculty's Student Academic Services.

If the course you want to register for is full, the SIS system will automatically ask if you want to be on the wait list. If you agree, you will be placed on the wait list and informed of your number on the list.  The system will then inform you by email when space becomes available and you will be automatically registered in the course.

Please note that departmental advisors or staff do not have the jurisdiction to register you if the class is full (overfilling a class is not permitted as it is against Univeristy fire regulations), nor can they add you to the waiting list or change your place on the list.

If you are trying to register for a 200, 300 or 400-level ACTU/MACF/MAST/MATH/STAT course and got blocked due to reserve seats/capacity, this means that:

  • the course is reserved for Math & Stats students because it is a program requirement; and/or
  • the course has reserved seats for students in other programs and they are full.

In these cases, you have the option of placing yourself on the wait list should any seats become available in future (the reserves are lifted two weeks before the beginning of classes).  Should the wait list be full, you will have to monitor the situation and try until a seat becomes available.

You are permitted to take a course for a second time if you failed and want a pass, or to better the grade received.  Note that your annual and cummulative GPA will count the latest grade you received for the course, and only the first course will be credited towards your degree.

The system allows you to register on your own, but you will need to contact a departmental student academic advisor for a pre-requisite waiver if you had been given one for the first course.

You are permitted to take a course for a second time if you failed and want a pass, or to better the grade received.  Note that your annual and cummulative GPA will count the latest grade you received for the course, and only the first course will be credited towards your degree.

For a previously exempted course, the system will not allow you to register on your own:

  • Mathematics and Statistics program students must submit an Arts & Science Faculty Student Request Form with supporting documents to our Undergraduate Program Assistant in LB 901-2 or by email.  The Department will make its recommendation and then forward the request to the Faculty of Arts & Science Student Academic Services. The Faculty will process the request and the student will be notified of the outcome.
  • Students in other programs must contact their home department to find out the procedures, even if the request is for one of our courses.
  • Independent students must contact Serhiy Homonyuk in the Arts & Science Faculty's Student Academic Services Office.  More information here.

Student request forms must be filled properly or it will be returned to the student; missing documentation will cause unecessary delays that may result in the request not being approved. The student request should include a valid reason, a current copy of your student record, and supporting documentation validating the request.

Students who want to take a course for a third time  will make these requests via the Student Hub (My CU Account, Student Center, Undergraduate Student Request forms:

  • Course repeat (This request will not be processed if there is an outstanding balance on your account).

Note that your annual and cummulative GPA will count the latest grade you received for the course, and only the first course will be credited towards your degree.

Below is information on what you should do if you want to register a third time for a course:

  • Mathematics and Statistics program students must  make these requests via the Student Hub (My CU Account, Student Center, Undergraduate Student Request forms:
  • Course repeat (This request will not be processed if there is an outstanding balance on your account). a strong case must be made.  The Department will make its recommendation and then forward the request to the Faculty of Arts & Science Student Academic Services. The Faculty will process the request and the student will be notified of the outcome.
  • Students in other programs must contact their home department to find out the procedures, even if the request is for one of our courses.

The student request should include a valid reason, a current copy of your student record, and supporting documentation validating the request.

Exemptions are different from prerequisite waivers. An exemption is granted to a student upon admission if the student took and passed a course required in their program with more than D+ in CEGEP or equivalent studies. Changes in exemptions are exceptional and students need to have compelling reasons.

If you realize that you were not given an exemption for a course that should have been included, you can request to add an exemption, as follows:

  • Mathematics & Statistics program students must submit an Arts & Science Faculty Student Request Form with supporting documents to our Undergraduate Program Assistant in LB 901-2 or by email.  The Department will make its recommendation and then forward the request to the Arts & Science Faculty's Student Academic Services. The Faculty will process the request and the student will be notified of the outcome.
  • Students in other programs must contact their home department to find out the procedures, even if it is to add an exemption for one of our courses.
  • *Independent students must contact Serhiy Homonyuk in the Arts & Science Faculty's Student Academic Services Office.  More information here.

Student request forms must be filled properly or it will be returned to the student; missing documentation will cause unecessary delays that may result in the request not being approved. The student request should include a valid reason, a current copy of your student record, and supporting documentation validating the request.

If an exemption was granted to you but you need to get a grade for the course to get into a program, you may request to have an exemption removed.

You can request to remove an exemption as follows:

  • Mathematics & Statistics program students must submit an Arts & Science Faculty Student Request Form with supporting documents to our Undergraduate Program Assistant in LB 901-2 or by email; a strong case must be made.  The Department will make its recommendation and then forward the request to the Faculty of Arts & Science Student Academic Services. The Faculty will process the request and the student will be notified of the outcome.
  • Students in other programs must contact their home department to find out the procedures, even if it is to remove an exemption for one of our courses.

While completing a degree in our Department, a student may wish to take a course at another Quebec institution or at another university outside of the province. Students may do so for a variety of reasons (different course offerings, experience at another school, closeness to home, etc). The procedures to follow are found here.

Students must submit an application for readmission in order to obtain permission to register at the University. More information can be found here.

Students are admitted into a BA degree or a BSc depending on their educational background:

- Students in the BA or BSc need to have taken MATH 203, 204 and 205 at the Cegep level;
- Students in the BSc took several courses in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the Cegep level.

Sometimes students choose BA on their application without realizing that they are elible to get into the BSc. If you were admitted into the BA and are eligible to be in the BSc, you must request a degree transfer if you want to switch.

If you are in the BA because you did not satisfy the BSc requirement at the time of admission, you need to take the following courses (a total of 21 credits) if you want to switch:

- take Physics 204, 205, 206 (3 credits each) + Physics labs 224, 225, 226 (1 credit each);
- take Chemistry 205 and 206 (3 credits each); and
- take Biology 201 (3 credits).

You can then request a degree transfer.

Please note that only 18 credits of the 30 credits (21 credits Physics, Chemistry and Biology + MATH 203, 204 and 205) can be counted as part of the 90 BSc program credits; all 30 credits can be counted for Extended Credit Program (ECP) students.
