Don McNaughton brought the Schenley Football Awards to national prominence
Concordia University and the Loyola Alumni Association awarded the prestigious Loyola Medal to business executive, community volunteer and Schenley awards patron Donald W. McNaughton.
The last such presentation was made in 1979.
Mr. McNaughton, 64, former President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Schenley Canada Inc., was honoured at a ceremony Wednesday, April 17, 1991. Concordia Rector and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Kenniff made the formal presentation. Alex Carpini, Loyola Alumni Association President, and Mike Jalbert, nominating committee chair, co-hosted the evening.
Donald W. McNaughton is a member and past Chairman of Concordia's Board of Governors and has served as a director on several boards, including the Central Guaranty Trust Company and Loto-Quebec.
He has also been involved with many charitable organizations; he is immediate past President of St. Mary's Hospital, President of the St. Patrick's Society, immediate past Chairman of the Canada Safety Council and former Vice-President and Director of the Canadian Arthritis Society. He has also worked for the Society for Handicapped Children, the Council for Canadian Unity and the Boy Scouts of Canada, among others.
In 1963, McNaughton joined Schenley Canada Distillery as director of advertising, and quickly moved up the ranks. He was named president of the company in 1969 and CEO three years later. While at Schenley, McNaughton devoted considerable time to the Canadian Football League’s Schenley Awards, and was inducted into the CFL’s Hall of Fame as a builder in 1994.
His selection was made by a seven-member joint university I alumni nominating committee, which was established after the 1990 Loyola Alumni Association Inc. Board determined that the medal should be re-instated. McNaughton's nomination was unanimously approved by the University's Board of Governors.
