Julie Chu was named head coach of the Concordia Stingers women's hockey program in 2016. She came to Concordia from the U.S. with an impressive hockey résumé from her time as a student athlete at Harvard University and as an Olympian with Team USA.
Chu is tied as the second-most decorated U.S. female in Olympic Winter Games history. As a key member and assistant captain of Team USA, she won silver medals at the Olympic Games in 2002, 2010 and 2014, and a bronze in 2006. Chu also won five gold medals at International Ice Hockey Federation world championships: 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Chu began her coaching career after graduating from Harvard. She was an assistant coach for University of Minnesota Duluth and helped the Bulldogs win their fourth NCAA Division I national championship in 2008. She was also an assistant at Union College from 2010 to 2013. In summer 2016, she coached at U.S. U18 development camps.
Stingers head coach since 2016, Chu served as acting head coach for 2015-16. Under her guidance, the Stingers have reached the U Sports national championship four times, winning gold in 2022 and 2024, silver in 2023 and bronze in 2018.
Chu holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Harvard and was inducted into the Harvard Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
Named Women’s Hockey Coach of the Year by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec five times — most recently in 2025 — Chu was also named U SPORTS Coach of the Year in 2024 and 2025. She was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medals in 2024 and received the Concordia University Alumni Association's Honorary Life Membership in 2025.
