Outstanding Faculty and Staff Award

Matina Skalkogiannis jokes that she has worked at Concordia for so long, it’s become part of her DNA. Beginning as a part-time employee at the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment straight out of high school, she remained the department assistant for 20 years, while also completing her bachelors and master’s degrees in history at Concordia.

Following a couple of other positions at the university, she joined the School of Irish Studies in 2010, working as assistant to the principal and student advisor. In the young and thriving unit, she has helped organize more than 75 public lectures and four national and international academic conferences. She also manages the numerous academic scholarships awarded by the School to its students.

Her work is driven by efficiency, effectiveness and above all, kindness. Whether assisting students, faculty or staff, she prioritizes collegiality and building a sense of community. She attributes her long tenure at Concordia to the inspiring individuals she’s worked with, who have made her career both fulfilling and meaningful, while also helping her forge lifelong friendships.
