The emotional experience of sustainability courses: Learned eco-anxiety, potential ontological adjustment

Introductory sustainability courses evoke emotional responses in students, ranging from sadness and worry to empowerment and awareness. These reactions reflect a clash between established societal norms leading to this unsustainability and growing environmental consciousness, potentially leading to eco-anxiety and a shift in worldview. Instructors should recognize and address these emotions, fostering positive transformational learning through discussions on self-ontology and emotional awareness.
