Maintaining healthy relationships is essential in every aspect of our lives. Typically, we think about relationships as romantic and sexual, but we also have coworkers, family, community members, friends, and many other relationships. At any point, any relationship can become unhealthy: a partner doesn’t respect consent, a colleague takes too much of your time, or a family member constantly requires too much emotional labour. These boundary violations can be harmful, awkward, and difficult to respond to.
