Congratulations to Dr. Nora Jaffary, who has just published her new monograph, entitled Reproduction and Its Discontents in Mexico: Childbirth and Contraception, 1750-1905 (UNC Chapel Hill, 2016). The book chronicles colonial and nineteenth-century beliefs and practices surrounding conception, pregnancy and its prevention, and birth. Tracking Mexico’s transition from colony to nation, Nora demonstrates the central role of reproduction in ideas about female sexuality and virtue in the development of modern Mexico.
