Dr. Karl Hele's cross-appointment to the Department of History was confirmed by the provost's office last week. Dr. Hele is an Associate Professor in the School of Community and Public Affairs and Director of our university's First Peoples Studies program, which is housed at SCPA. He was trained as an historian at the University of Toronto (MA, 1994) and McGill University (PhD 2003), after which he held tenure-track positions at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Western Ontario. Since his arrrival at Concordia in 2010, Karl has been actively engaged in History both in his pedagogy and research. He has taught a number of graduate and undergraduate courses and tutorials cross-listed with History and the Law and Society Program on topics such as “Indian Policy in British North America/Canada” and “Indigenous People and Colonial Law” and served as co-supervisor on or advisor on graduate student theses in History at both Concordia and in history departments in other Canadian universities. We are very pleased indeed to welcome Dr. Hele to the department, where he has already begun supervising graduate students and contributing to discussions around the Law and Society program and the department's ongoing engagement with Concordia's post-TRC Indigenous Directions initiatives.
