The World Conference on Statelessness recently took place at Taylor’s University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with more than 400 participants from around the world gathering to discuss, debate, and collaborate on the critical issue of statelessness. Organized by the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI), Nationality for All (NFA), and Development of Human Resources for Rural Areas (DHRRA) Malaysia, the conference aimed to create a platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by stateless individuals.
Speaking during the thematic session the child’s right to nationality, CSLP Manager Zeina Ismail Allouche delved into the complexities surrounding adoption and its potential consequences, leading to a state of statelessness for the child involved. The panel discussion addressed the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks governing separation from the biological family and that transracial/international adoption is not in the best interests of the child.
