Kelly Norah Drukker has been spending considerable time in Pointe-St-Charles of late. She is learning about her family’s roots through Concordia University’s Right to the City program, wherein 60 students from four classes hit the streets of the Pointe to get a first-hand glimpse of what makes the community tick.

The students in the program are involved in everything from developing art projects to oral histories. They, in turn, will share their findings with the community on Saturday afternoon, through art displays and short theatrical performances, at Salon Laurette and project host Share the Warmth.

“The students learn about the community, and the community in turn learns more about its history through the research undertaken,” Concordia teaching assistant Dane Stewart explains in an interview at Share the Warmth. “The program is in its second year and affords a unique educational opportunity, with both parties learning from one another.”

The courses offered are art history, oral history, theatre and art education.

"Because (Pointe-St-Charles is) such an open space and place, it gives us lots of opportunity to learn from both the historical and contemporary reality," says Kathleen Vaughan, centre, a professor in Concordia's Right to the City program. She is joined outside Share the Warmth's Pointe headquarters by teaching assistant Dane Stewart and student Kelly Norah Drukker. | Dave Sidaway / Montreal Gazette
