Concordia Model UN takes on sky-high challenges
Concordia’s Model United Nations (ConMUN) started off 2018 with the momentum created by having successfully pitched and co-hosted a global event in Montreal at the end of November.
In collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the group invited high-school and post-secondary students from all seven continents to engage with pressing aviation challenges during the inaugural Model ICAO Forum.
Participants grappled with questions about regulating unmanned aircraft systems, dangerous air cargo, security training and more. They proposed solutions to a panel of industry experts who eventually chose one winning team: Aaron Clark-Ashe, Marwa Ahmed and Christopher Fabian from Concordia.
The Concordia student group had proposed co-hosting a model UN conference to the ICAO last year. Instead they were invited to plan the Model ICAO Forum alongside the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit.

Andrei Bochis, ConMUN's president, and Gabriel-Louis Guppy, the group's vice-president of special projects, both addressed diplomats and other world leaders in the assembly hall room during the summit.
“Overall, this event demonstrates the potential for our students to influence local and international communities,” said Guppy.
Next up for ConMUN
This month, Concordia student delegates head to Boston and Toronto for the Harvard National Model United Nations (February 15-18) and the North American Model United Nations (February 22-25). Later this year, members are scheduled to attend conferences in Ottawa and Panama City.
