A new student housing co-operative opens up in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood
It was just over a year ago that the Woodnote student housing co-operative first broke ground. Now the 90-unit building in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood is gearing up to open its doors.
Located across from Parc Lafontaine on the corner of Papineau Avenue and Sherbrooke Street, Woodnote is approximately 25 minutes away by transit from the Sir George William Campus. It can accommodate up to 144 students.
Yael Ezerzer, ambassador for the Woodnote, says the goal is “to give access to inclusive, affordable and democratically run housing, for Concordia students, by Concordia students.”
Woodnote’s website provides access to virtual tours of the apartments and offers a layout of each floor to understand which units are still available. Ezerzer confirms that a few studio apartments and some three-bedroom units are still open.
July 1 marked the end of the first round of applications, which was exclusively reserved for undergraduate Concordia students. Now spots are open to grad students as well as applicants from other universities in Montreal.
Independent living in a community
Woodnote fosters a community-focused lifestyle. Residents will have access to a terrace, a common room and other shared common areas that may be used for study sessions and meetings.
“That’s a really good thing at a time like this. We’ll be having online school next term, but residents will have the chance to engage and participate in a student environment,” Ezerzer points out.
“It’s an independent building, so you’re not necessarily living in a residence with a meal plan. But you’re also integrated into a community of Concordia students around you.”

The project is mainly funded by the Concordia Student Union and its Off-Campus Housing and Job Resource Centre, Unité de travail pour l’implantation de logement étudiant (UTILE) and the City of Montreal. A full list of partner organizations is also available.
