Sarah Young has worn many hats in her career: entrepreneur, executive, venture capitalist, communications advisor, coalition builder and board member. At NATIONAL Public Relations, one of Canada’s leading public relations firms, she works as the partner and senior counsel based in Halifax.

Young became partner when the company acquired a majority interest in MT&L Public Relations, a firm she and her partners owned for more than a decade. A self-described optimist, she is known to shun negativity.

"I find opportunity, power and conviction to face down barriers," says Young, adding that she likes to bring people together to tackle issues collectively.

At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Young and nine other women launched Sandpiper Ventures, a venture capital fund with a specific focus on initiatives developed and led by women.

Keys to success

"Momentum over perfection."

Career milestone

“Launching Sandpiper Ventures as a way to invest in women founders of tech-enabled companies is definitely a milestone. It’s exciting to help young women who are making amazing things happen.”

Career challenge

“Leading others during the COVID-19 pandemic was a lot of pressure. There was no playbook, no map and no best practices.”

Career satisfaction

“I love the power of connecting people to tackle an idea or challenge.”

The Concordia factor

"I loved the discussions and debates at Concordia — that it’s okay not to have the answers but it’s important to ask the questions. University was a very stimulating time of my life. I trained for triathlons and studied in libraries and coffee shops. I’ve maintained my reading, studying and people watching skills and turned them into an artform.”

Advice

“I had a mentor who always asked, 'What’s the right thing to do?' I make decisions through that lens.”

Volunteerism

"I am passionate about the Trans Canada Trail, waterfronts and education, and sit on several boards, including Develop Nova Scotia, the YMCA for Greater Halifax/Dartmouth Board of Honorary Trustees and Creative Destruction Lab Atlantic."

Passion projects

“I like to run and cycle. I also have a house full of teenagers.”
