1,800 strong: Alumni and friends mark Concordia’s 50th anniversary at Homecoming 2024

More than 1,800 alumni and friends returned to campus for a special edition of Concordia’s annual Homecoming festivities. With 25-plus events — from reunions to a football game, campus tours to a dance party — Concordians marked the university’s 50th anniversary under the theme 50 Years: Forever Forward. Read on for highlights and photos of the revelries, which ran September 18 to 21.

Choral group Choir! Choir! Choir! united the crowd in an epic singalong and dance party featuring hits of the past five decades at Loyola’s Oscar Peterson Concert Hall. Hundreds in attendance joined in and belted out tunes karaoke-style, following the words up on the big screen. Guests later connected at a cocktail reception with live music at the 50th-anniversary Homecoming concert, featuring Juno Award-winning blues singer Dawn Tyler Watson, BFA 94, and the Celtic trio Trílangue, including alumna Kate Bevan-Baker, PhD 18, GrCert 19.

Celebrating Concordia’s roots, Loyola College graduates gathered at the Nifty 50 Homecoming reunion to honour the legacy of one our two founding institutions, 50 years after Loyola’s merger with Sir George Williams University formed Concordia.

More than 170 alumni and friends packed the hall, reminiscing and reconnecting with classmates. Among many heartfelt speeches, former Loyola Alumni Association president Donal Ryan, BComm 67, gave a tribute to his late friend John Limeburner, BComm 68, who passed away on September 7. Limeburner was a dedicated volunteer and past president of the Concordia University Alumni Association’s Loyola Alumni Founding Chapter. A strong alumni committee worked diligently for over a year to produce a resoundingly successful reunion.

The Homecoming football game and Alumni Zone tailgate united sports fans who enjoyed an entertaining game despite a loss for the Stingers against the McGill Redbirds. Alumni of the Concordia Stingers, Loyola College and Sir George Williams University teams were honoured at halftime. The football reunion dinner celebrated the long-standing history of our football alumni and honoured long-time dedicated volunteers Pete Regimbald, BA 73, former coach, and his wife Diane.

Our seventh Queer Homecoming welcomed back artist and producer Tranna Wintour, BA 10, as host and included engaging storytelling by Johanne Pelletier, director of Public Engagement at Concordia, followed by a spectacular drag performance by Kiara, Attd. 19, a standout from Season 1 of Canada’s Drag Race.

Alumni and friends joined faculty, staff and students for a festive 50th-anniversary barbecue at Loyola Campus following the Shuffle walkathon. The annual fundraiser has raised more than $3.1 million for Concordia students since 1990.

A dozen faculty, department and other reunions took place, including journalism, communication studies, political science, and physics, as well the Goodman Institute of Investment Management and the Concordia Commerce and Administration Students' Association (CASA).
