Three reasons employers are prioritizing cybersecurity skills for roles beyond IT
According to the Identity Theft Resource Centre’s 2023 annual data breach report, the US saw a 72% increase in data breaches in 2023 compared to 2021, the year that previously held the all-time record.
Cyber skills in today's job market are more important than ever before. Here are three reasons why.
1. Cyber attacks are growing in complexity
Cyber threats continue to become more sophisticated, making departments beyond IT vulnerable to potential attacks. While employees may be familiar with phishing, many are unaware of other common methods for cyberattacks, such as those involving unsecured wi-fi networks or reused passwords.
Employees who can anticipate and detect these threats will become indispensable to their organization.
2. Data privacy isn't just relevant to IT
As laws and regulations surrounding data privacy continue to become more stringent, businesses are relying on departments beyond IT to contribute to cybersecurity efforts.
Whether you’re working in HR (handling employee data), marketing (handling customer data), or legal (ensuring compliance with data privacy laws), acquiring cyber skills can help you distinguish yourself from the competition in today’s job market. But don’t wait—these skills will soon move from desired to required.
“When you’re getting a job, you have a certain toolkit, like a degree or language requirement. Cybersecurity skills are another crucial tool in your arsenal,” says Kedar Mendhurwar, a cybersecurity instructor at Concordia Continuing Education.
3. Cyber leaks are expensive for businesses
In 2024, IBM estimated that the global average cost of a data breach was almost US $5 million. But the financial blow isn’t the only burden organizations have to shoulder. These attacks also cause disruptions to operations and carry reputational damage that can permeate throughout an organization.
More and more businesses are realizing that cyber-savvy employees are their first line of defense against potential attacks.
