Regular physical activity has many benefits, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. Exercising too much can lead to physical and mental health consequences including:
- Injuries to tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage (learn about preventing training injuries)
- Muscle destruction and muscle mass loss
- Heart problems
- Sleep problems
- Loss of appetite
- Sexual desire loss
- Irritability and depression
Signs that you may be over-exercising:
- Exercise is more important than all other activities
- You neglect responsibilities and relationships to exercise
- Long-lasting muscle soreness, joint pain, aches and pains and injuries
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Elevated morning pulse
- Sudden inability to complete workouts, decrease in performance
- Feeling unmotivated and lacking energy
- Increased colds, sore throat and other illnesses
- Loss in appetite
- Mood changes, especially irritability and possibly depression
