Happy New Year! I wish you good health, happiness and many accomplishments.

Bram Freedman Bram Freedman

As most of us talk about our ambitions, plans and goals for the future, Concordia is charting its path as we grow in smart new ways.

It was great to see the Concordia community gather as part of our strategic directions initiative. Through conferences and proactive idea cafés on campus, we determined nine bold ways our university will move ahead. I’d like to thank everyone who shared their insight.

We have an impressive milestone underway — Concordia’s trailblazing Department of Communication Studies celebrates 50 years of intellectual curiosity and cultural output until the end of April. With 5,000 alumni — including star Hollywood producers and writers as well as Montreal and Canadian notables — the department boasts many success stories.

Our community gave a warm welcome to guests from all over the world in 2015 — including when we hosted the Association for Israel Studies conference. The successful event included a keynote address from Canada’s former attorney general and Member of Parliament Irwin Cotler.

True to our mission and heritage of changing lives through accessibility, Concordia will sponsor the education of five Syrian refugees and counting. Announced in partnership with Concordia’s Montreal Institute of Genocide Studies, the initiative demonstrates our international outreach — which we can all be proud of.

Great minds and celebrity journalists sparked discussions on top-of-mind topics such as digital identity, as part of Concordia’s popular Thinking Out Loud conversation series. Please join us for our next string of inspired talks starting January 28. This year’s lineup includes Kathy Reichs, a bestselling author and forensic anthropologist.

Our graduates continued to make their alma mater proud in 2015. Among their many accomplishments, 10 Concordia graduates were elected Members of Parliament, while alumnus Abbas Akhavan, BFA 04, earned a Sobey Art Award — a top distinction. Congratulations to all of them!

Our faculty brochures showcase Concordia’s cutting-edge research, prominent academics and the amazing student experience we offer. For every interest and affinity, there is a project at Concordia that needs your support. Public funding will provide us with enough funding to make us a good university but we need private support to make us a great university.

Keep in touch and register for our upcoming events! Hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Bram Freedman
