Upcoming changes to some Concordia emergency intercoms on campus

Starting May 1, Campus Safety and Prevention Services (CSPS) will begin decommissioning some yellow-box emergency intercoms across both the Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses. The initiative aims to streamline emergency communication infrastructure while ensuring essential safety measures remain in place.

Why are some intercoms being removed?

Over the past several months, CSPS has conducted a thorough assessment to determine which intercoms should be retained or removed.  The intercoms that will remain in service meet the following criteria:

• Cellphone reception: Intercoms will remain in areas with poor signal strength.
• High-traffic areas: Devices near classrooms, labs, and washrooms will be kept.
• Historical usage: Intercoms that have been recently used will not be removed.
• Outdoor locations: Priority is given to intercoms in well-lit, high-traffic outdoor spaces.

How to get help in an emergency

Despite these adjustments, multiple emergency contact options remain available for students, faculty, and staff:

• Office extension lines: Dial the extension 3717 from any internal office line (both hard lines and Teams phones) to quickly reach a CSPS agent.
• Cellphones: Community members are encouraged to save 514-848-3717 in their mobile contacts for quick access to CSPS.
• Rave Guardian app: This FREE app provides real-time emergency alerts, Safe Walk monitoring, and direct communication with CSPS personnel via phone or text. 
• Fire pull stations: In the event of an emergency or a fire, activating a pull station immediately notifies CSPS.

CSPS is encouraging all students, faculty, and staff to download the Concordia Rave Guardian app for direct emergency access.

How to download the app:

Step 1: Find Rave Guardian app in the App Store or Google Play.

Step 2: Once downloaded, enter your cellphone number and you will receive a verification code by text.

Step 3: Enter your Concordia email address to receive your verification code by email.

How to activate a student email account: 

•  Log in to the Student Hub with your netname. 
• Go to My CU Account > Personal information & accounts > Activate Office 365 email. 
• Your email will be ready by the next business day. Your email address will be: firstname.lastname@mail.concordia.ca 
  

Step 4: You will then be granted access to the branded Concordia Rave Guardian app.

• Use your Concordia email address, or the email address provided in your Student Centre or HR profile, when prompted. 
• When granted access, the Concordia logo will appear, and the main navigation bar will display in burgundy. If this doesn’t appear, you will not receive alerts.
