Times Higher Education recognizes Concordia as a top 100 young university worldwide
For the first time, Concordia scored the top spot in North America in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings. The rankings, which began in 2012, evaluate universities 50 years old or younger from around the world.
The 2024 Young University Rankings placed Concordia 80th out of 673 universities across the globe, up from 151-200 out of 605 last year. For the seventh consecutive year, Concordia was ranked number one in Canada.
The Young University Rankings consider the same measures of teaching, research environment, industry, research quality and international outlook as the overall THE World University Rankings (WUR), but alter their relative values to reflect young universities’ special characteristics.
In the 2024 WUR released last October, Concordia placed 501–600 worldwide and 21st out of 31 Canadian schools.
QS World University Rankings by Subject
In its 2024 edition, the QS World University Rankings by Subject (WURS) placed Concordia among the world’s top universities in 14 narrow subjects and in three broad subjects, echoing its position of the past few years.
Concordia ranked in three WURS broad subject areas, the same as it has since 2016:
- Arts and Humanities, 203rd, up from 236th last year
- Engineering and Technology, 337th, down from 293rd last year
- Social Sciences and Management, 401-450, up from 451-500 last year
Concordia disciplines placed in the global top 200 and Canadian top seven in three narrow subjects:
- Communication and Media Studies, 51-100 globally and third in Canada
- Art and Design, 101-150 globally and second nationally
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 151-200 globally and seventh nationally
The university also ranked in the top 10 nationally in five other subjects:
- Linguistics, tied in 8th
- Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering, tied in 10th
- English Language and Literature, tied in 10th
- Modern Languages, tied in 10th
- Computer Science, tied in 10th
Center for World University Rankings
Concordia landed in the top three per cent of universities worldwide in the recent Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), released in May. In this year’s edition, Concordia ranked 628th out of 20,966 universities, slightly down from 2023.
As has been the case each year since 2019, Concordia was slotted 22nd out of 39 Canadian universities. It placed fifth out of nine in Quebec and seventh among 15 comprehensive universities nationally.
The CWUR evaluates universities on seven weighted indicators. The centre claims to be the only global university ranking to measure the quality of the learning environment and research based on verifiable data rather than on surveys or university submissions.
