LACUNA - LACUNE

Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron
October 1 – November 5, 2021

In this solo exhibition, inhabiting the entire FOFA Gallery, Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron continues her explorations of industrial and institutional building materials, with a new site-specific installation work created for the gallery’s main space. Drawing inspiration from recent photographic research, born of the experiences and decelerations of the pandemic, new contexts have emerged for her chosen materials. What began as a search for feelings of awe and an immersion in the supposedly ideal state of the natural world, has instead become a meditation on the precarious relationship between humans and the spaces we inhabit.

In a series of immersive photographs, the artist records her encounters with post-consumer waste that, in its later stages of use and decay, becomes part of the natural landscape —used tires floating in a lake, disintegrating rope on the forest floor, shattered safety glass embedded into moss. In the gallery, undulating strips of metal evoke the increasingly unpredictable movements of wind and water, or the destabilizing rise and fall of economic and statistical data.

Abbondanza-Bergeron is intensely aware of available space; usual routes are diverted or stalled, and unexpected things come into focus as the body and the gaze are reoriented. Through her strategic uses of proximity and distance, she draws us into an embodied and heightened experience of what surrounds us – one that oscillates between beauty and destruction, movement and constraint.

About the Artist: 

Andréanne Abbondanza-Bergeron is a Montreal-based installation artist and current visiting scholar at Concordia University as the 2017 recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. She completed her MFA in Sculpture at Concordia University (‘16) where she received the 2016 Yvonne L. Bombardier scholarship in Visual Art, and holds a M.A. in Art Education and a BFA in Studio Arts.

Abbondanza-Bergeron’s installation, photography, drawing, and sculpture works have been exhibited in various solo and curated group shows in various Canadian cities and abroad in Germany, UK, Belgium, Mexico and the United-States. Her work has benefited from the support from the Canada Council for the Arts, and she is a professor in the Communications, Media and Studio Arts department at Vanier College.
