ARTH 370-A Studies in Canadian Art: Indigenous Art: Pacific Northwest Coast- The South
- Thursdays, 11:45am -14:15 pm
- Course delivery: Online
- Instructor: Dr. Michelle McGeough
This course will explore the artistic production of the First Nations people, whose traditional territories are located in the southern region of the Northwest coast. This includes the Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwaka’wakw Nations. There are a number of ways that we will approach this inquiry including chronological and thematic methodologies as well as oral traditions. We will examine the cultural production of the Northwest coast from prehistory to contemporary times keeping in mind how a connection to place and community are expressed through the visual arts.
This is one part of a two-part course on Northwest Coast Indigenous art, offered in Fall 2021 and Winter 2022. (The other course is: ARTH 370 Studies in Canadian Art – Pacific NW Indigenous, North.) Students are encouraged to register for both courses for a comprehensive overview of this topic, but are allowed to register for one (either fall or winter) of the courses.
