ARTH 366 Studies in 19th Century Art and Architecture

This survey course will examine the production and evolution of the fine arts and decorative arts during the nineteenth century. Through a chronological and thematic approach, this course will focus on Europe from the French Revolution up to the beginning of the First World War. The nineteenth century saw numerous and important changes, artistically, politically, socially and technologically. The interrelation of art and design with these changes will be explored. A particular attention will be given to the notions of gender, sexuality, class, race and colonialism through critical theories. The European artistic canon will be studied in order to understand it and most importantly to question it. The themes developed will include, for example, Impressionism and fashion, Landscape paintings and colonialism and Realism and class inequalities
