Breaking the Wall: Central and Eastern European Art at the End of the 20th Century

The aim of this course is to provide the student with a knowledge of Roman art and architecture, from its early beginnings with the Etruscan , (ca. 900 B.C.), to the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 A.D.). The course will proceed chronologically. To punctuate the evolution of Roman art and architecture, a discussion on the historical background pertaining to specific eras, will open each lecture. This will help towards the understanding of each artistic style within its historical, social and economic context. Moreover, some lectures will be devoted to specific topics such as: ancient glass, mosaics and jewelry, as these will add to our knowledge of certain aspects of  Roman artistic technology.
