This course examines the theory and practice of architecture, decoration and planning in the European context (especially France, Italy and England) during the critical period that marks the beginning of the modern era, the 17th and 18th centuries. The readings and lectures stress the relationship between architecture and the broader cultural, social, and political context. Themes will include the importance of the “world view” as a basis for historical interpretation, early modern urbanism and architecture in the Paris of Maria de’ Medici, High Baroque design and decoration in Rome and Venice, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the rebuilding of London churches by Wren, the design and decoration of Versailles and the gardens, the Palladian movement in England and Neo-classicism.
