ARTH 267 Aspects of the History of Photography
- Tuesdays, 8:45-11:15am
- Online: Access through Moodle
- Instructor: Stéphanie Hornstein
Grounded in the idea that photography is a social practice as well as an art form, this survey course will present a range of events and objects selected from the history of photography. Through broadly chronological and thematic lectures, we will become acquainted with key figures and movements as well as with lesser-known formats, genres, and historically marginalized practitioners which fall by the wayside of canonical narratives. The popular engagement with photography from its inception to today will also form an important focus of this class. In order to reflect the fact that that we are studying photographic history within a specific learning context, departures from standard histories will be taken to fold Canadian and Indigenous content into an otherwise Euro- and American-centric framework.
