ARTH 361 Studies in Ancient Roman Art and Architecture

This course traces the development of Roman art and architecture beginning with the Etruscans and ending with Constantine and the beginnings of Early Christian Art. An emphasis will be placed on the Greek legacy in the forms of Ancient Rome, and its contribution to the architecture, painting and sculpture. A range of topics in visual culture beyond architecture, painting and sculpture will involve coins, and urban infrastructure and design. Other topics to be considered will include the propagandistic and ideological use of visual culture by Roman emperors, issues of gender and class privilege, domestic architecture, funerary art and the art of the Roman provinces. Course readings will include current scholarly art historical and archaeological literature.
