- Tuesdays, 11:45am-2:15pm
- EV-1.605
- Instructor: Laura Enríquez
The goal of this course is to offer a general introduction to key themes and current trends in the history of Dutch and Flemish art, 1600-1700. The course will focus on Northern European painting, although other artistic manifestations may be considered, and connections with other traditions will be made.
The course will examine major artistic developments in seventeenth-century Dutch painting, in relationship with a larger cultural, intellectual and sociopolitical context. It will cover the emergence and consolidation of the following pictorial conventions: still life painting, genre scenes, landscape and seascape painting, and group portraiture. It will address the following topics: the Reformation and Calvinism; the consolidation of the Dutch Republic and the making of national identity; global exchange and trade culture and experience in Dutch cities; the new philosophy; art theory and the justification of painting.
Taking into account current trends in the history of art, including materiality and the senses, connections with the history of knowledge, and the global turn, this course will examine a variety of sources, making a particular emphasis on the relationship between art and intellectual and cultural concepts and practices.
