Co-op questions
It is important to understand that CO-OP Institute is a separate entity from GCS and has its own rules, most of them dictated by the Quebec’s Government (as the government pays back part of the internship salary).
General Questions
Visit the Graduate Co-Op website for rules, regulations and information on how to apply.
Keep in mind the following :
- Students from the faculty of Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science should not have completed more than 16 credits to apply.
- Student will graduate with CO-OP mention – attractive to employers as it clearly indicates exposure to career fundamentals
- Student will have ONE 12-17 weeks paid internship at earliest in the 3rd CO-OP semester
- Internship does not get any academic credit
Graduate Co-op students must maintain a CGPA of at least 3.3 throughout the program.
Any internship extension will not be part of CO-OP (Government will not reimburse the Company for student’s income). Should the employer wish to extend the internship, the student is ultimately responsible to clearly inform the employer and the Institute.
Student may take one course during their internship with written permission from their employer; the course must not interfere with their internship.
- Are required to be registered in a full-time course load during academic terms, regardless of the above policies. International students must always refer to the International Students Office for all questions regarding course registration requirements, immigration, work visa, student status, etc.
- Will receive a letter of support for their Co-op work permit application from the Institute upon admission to the program
M.Eng. Aerospace students - Engr 7961 Industrial Stage & Training.
There is only one internship course – Engr 7961 – Industrial Stage & Training in the Master of Engineering in Aerospace program.
Multiple internships are not permitted for credit in the program.
You can undertake a 2nd internship (or more) without credit. From the point of view of the department and program, this is considered independent work. If you are an international student, you are entirely responsible to verify that you are allowed to hold such a position. Further, participating in an internship without credit does not satisfy the requirement for full time studies.
The extension of the internship is for the purpose of finishing an ongoing project. Students will not be getting additional credits in the term in which the internship is extended. Students can take the time in the coming semester to finish the project and submit the report. When the report is submitted, the grade will be evaluated and assigned to the ENGR 7961 course in the term that the student initially registered. From the time the report is initially due to the time the submitted report is evaluated, a grade of IP (In Progress) will appear on your transcript for the course ENGR 7961.
The extension is *not* for the purpose of completing a new project or undertaking a second internship.
You must request an extension to the ENGR 7961 internship with the graduate program coordinator for the M.Eng Aerospace program prior to the initial due date of the internship report.
Students are responsible to find the internship positions, though there are some resources they can take advantage of.
List of websites to support your search for an internship opportunity.
Students can also contact a professor in the department to determine if they have any research projects available for students.
** New M.Eng Aerospace students are encouraged to consider applying for the graduate co-op program to assist in finding internships for the ENGR 7961 course requirements.
Please note that registering with co-op is not required, and you are free to obtain internships via other routes. However, the co-op program provides training for preparing applications and access to internal internship postings. The co-op program is run independently of the M.Eng Aerospace program and you need to be registered in co-op for two terms prior to them allowing you to apply for open positions. If you want to consider internships offered through the co-op program, it is important to register to their program early.
No. There is a single internship in the M.Eng Aerospace program and students enrolled in the co-op institute program do not complete a 2nd internship. The co-op institute program has certain courses (carrying no credit applicable to the M.Eng Aerospace program) that students must register for, WILE 600 and 601. Those courses are for different, co-op institute related, activities. You must enroll in WILE 601 and ENGR 7961 in the same semester in which you complete your M.Eng Aerospace internship.
The technical report should describe:
- The work environment in which you completed your internship and its relevance to the aerospace industry and aerospace engineering practice;
- The position you held and your tasks and projects;
- The type of work you performed, ideally with examples.
If information about the data and/or processes you used/performed during your internship is confidential, there are a few options:
- Use stand-in example data that does not come from the systems you worked with or data that is older and no longer confidential;
- Have your report sanitized (“black out” words/data/sections) if the amount of obfuscated data is relatively low;
- Have your employer draft a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that can be signed by the Program Director so they can consult your report and evaluate it.
If an NDA needs to be signed, you can inquire for full contact and identifying details of the program director to the graduate program coordinator. Your report can then either be hand-delivered to the program director in a sealed envelope or an asymmetric public encryption key (a public gpg key) can be obtained so you can transmit the report electronically through an encrypted email.
