Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Overview

This prestigious fellowship is designed to attract and retain top-tier national and international researchers who are proven leaders in their fields. Seventy Banting fellowships — each valued at $70,000/year for two years — are awarded annually, distributed equally between the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Host universities are required to endorse your application by describing their commitment and support for your proposed research program and demonstrate the synergy between your research area and the university's strategic priorities.

Brief Summary of eligibility

You must have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD degree between the timeline of September 15, 2021 through September 30, 2025 (inclusively). Only in rare circumstances will a Banting PDF be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution or within the same research environment where they completed their PhD or to an applicant who is affiliated for more than six months with the proposed host institution.
Canadian and international candidates are eligible.

Application instructions

If you wish to apply for a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship hosted at Concordia, you must first secure a supervisor who is willing to support your application and then submit a letter of intent to the associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies from your proposed supervisor’s faculty before the deadline.

Documents required for your letter of intent:

One-page (single spaced) description of your research project;
Curriculum Vitae listing degrees earned, nationality, awards, research contributions, work experience, and significant extra-curricular and/or service activities with a brief (max 50 words) description of the applicant’s leadership role;
Brief statement (maximum one page) by your proposed supervisor describing the research environment, facilities, resources and personnel that will be available during your appointment. The statement should also identify any non-salary financial support that your supervisor will provide (e.g. support for conference travel). Should you have obtained your PhD degree at Concordia or have been affiliated (current postdoc) for more than six months in a research environment at Concordia, then your proposed supervisor must justify the decision for your candidature at Concordia.

Internal selection process

The selection process consists of the following steps:

You must submit your Letter of Intent (LOI) to the associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies from your prospective faculty before the deadline of June 7, 2024:

- Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science: Emad Shihab
LOIs will be reviewed and ranked (according to the Tri-Agency guidelines) at the faculty level. This process is overseen by each faculty’s respective associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies;
Each faculty will submit its ranked LOIs to the School of Graduate Studies;
The associate deans of Research and Graduate Studies, together with the associate dean of Graduate Student Academic Matters & Postdoctoral Studies, will convene to select the strongest candidates.
All applications will be reviewed by each faculty. However, only the most promising applications will be discussed during the adjudication committee meeting.
You will be notified by the end of July whether the university will endorse your application. This will allow enough time for you to complete your application with support from the university. We will use this period to finalize our institutional support for each application prior to the September 17, 2024 deadline.
