Distributed in-network computing for iot-enabled wireless mixed reality applications
Reference number: 14004
Supervisors: Rodolfo Coutinho and Yousef Shayan
Program description
The symbiotic design of wireless Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile mixed reality (MR) technologies will enable transformative applications in social sciences, humanities, engineering, and arts and will have a profound impact benefiting society. Users will interact with smart systems, where IoT-enabled sensors (e.g., cameras, lidars, microphones) will provide context information from the environment in a real-time manner and mixed reality technologies, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will provide users with enhanced information and immersive experiences. This research program will model the distributed in-networking computing problem considering heterogeneous IoT/MR tasks and in-networking computing entities (e.g., edge servers, programmable routers, DSPs, and FPGAs), develop FPGAs-based edge computing devices and implementation of computer vision algorithms on them for object detection and classification, and MR content delivery, and design and development of software-defined networking (SDN) architecture for the distributed management and resource allocation of FPGA edge devices for enabling mobile MR applications.
