Leaves
Leave of absence
If you need to take a break from your studies, you should apply for a Leave of Absence.
What is a Leave of Absence?
An approved Leave of Absence will temporarily discontinue your studies and extend your program time limit by the period of the leave.
During a leave, you will not be able to register for courses, write exams, nor request guidance on thesis and research work. Your access to university services, however, will depend on the type of leave.
Types of leaves
Leave without access: You will not have access to the libraries, university or student services. No fees will be charged.
Leave with access: Exceptionally, you will have access to the library, university and student services. A flat fee per term will be charged.
Parental leave: For the birth or adoption of a child. You will have access to the library, university and student services. No fees will be charged.
How to request a leave?
You can apply for a leave through a service request, prior to the DNE deadline of the term in which you intend on being away. Make sure to specify the reason for the leave and provide all supporting documentation. It’s important to consult with your Graduate Program Director before submitting your request.
If you are a thesis-based student, discuss the leave and its implications with your supervisor and anyone else involved in your research project.
International students
If you are an international student, consult the International Student Office about the immigration implications of a leave of absence to understand how it will affect your legal status in Canada before submitting your request.
Awards, funding and student loans
A leave from your program may have implications on receiving awards, loans or bursaries. It is essential to verify the regulations associated with any funding you may have before submitting your request.
